Not enough hours in the day

Here I sit again at the end of the day thinking that I really should be doing this earlier. Its been a long day, first with work, trying to wrap some important stuff up before the weekend. After work it was an evening out with the family and now it’s 11pm and I’m just sitting down in front of my computer to try and finish the switch of my other domains over to the new host. Plus I still have to finish getting all the plugins and widgets  I use on my blog up and running again.

All of that and even as I write this, in the back of my mind is the nagging feeling that I should be doing some other chores around the house. It seems there aren’t enough hours in the day to do all that I want to do. But I’m sure I’ll find the time. After all, I should be getting some time off around Christmas perhaps then I’ll be able to catch up.

Right now the hardest part is that about half my domains are on my old host the other on my new host. So I’m pulling email from 2 servers for the same accounts, and I’m still trying to figure out what email I want to migrate and what I want to just delete. And how I want it to work on the new server. The level of control I have is impressive, but I’m still not sure how to wheeled that control yet. So hang in there, this should be my last, I’m working on the domain move post, I’ll be back to my regular content by tomorrow.

Digital House Cleaning

Sorry for the late post tonight, I’ve been trying to get my posts up in the morning but today that wasn’t possible.  Today has been a day of electronic house cleaning. It started when I decided it was time to change my website host. Then expanded when I did a wipe of my cell phone, and should have continued tonight with reorganizing my programming projects to use Subversion.

I’ve changed hosts because as I’ve been using my blog more and more, I’ve been noticing a lot of issues with my existing host. The service would be down 2 or 3 times a day, and It got to be annoying. So I spent the last week reviewing my options and had settled on one, but when I went to pay there was a bit of a unexpected bump in the price after the first month. To be fair the service was worth the full price, it’s just my limit is less then or equal to what I’ was already paying. So I went on a hunt and came up with a new host webfaction.com. Now They have all the features that I was looking for and some I hadn’t considered. The big problem is that it’s raw power. The configuration is a lot more hands on, and a less polished then the services I’m used to. So far I’m impressed.

To Nap or not to Nap

Over the last little while we’ve been having some bedtime issues with Jacob. When he has his afternoon nap he doesn’t want to go to bed, sometimes it’s 10 or 11 before he finally goes down for the night. So you think get rid of his nap, but that’s easier said then done. Right now when Jacob doesn’t nap he becomes grumpy and acts out by 4, It’s even worse if you try to shorten his nap by waking him up.

JacobSleeping

If fact in the last six weeks I can trace all of Jacobs major melt downs, at home and in public to him being over tired. This isn’t a good thing. So the question is what is the solution? I’m thinking the only solution is taking the nap away and living through grumpy Jacob until he adjusts to a earlier bedtime and perhaps a slightly later wake up time. The question is when is best to deal with the Grumpy Jacob. I don’t think it’s fair to have Melissa dealing with it alone while I work and she is at home with the kids, but it will take longer then a weekend. So do we wait till I’m off around Christmas? But do we really want to have moody Jacob at all the different family occasions during that time? Any thoughts from the interweb?

Trivia Night

I write this on the way home from trivia, its been a long day and I haven’t found the time to blog before now. To be fair I had a bit of time before trivia to write but nothing came. So now I punch this out while desperately hoping I’ll catch the 11:30 bus.

Torontos co-operative pub quiz leagueIt was the final game of the season for my trivia team, we won but I didn’t catch the final score. I play in The Canadian Inquisition trivia leage. The league has 17 teams, 2 divisions Torquemada and Jaworski with 8 teams each, one team writing the question each season. The games themselves are 10 rounds of 10 question. Each team has 5 players and the questions alternate between teams. Each player gets a question and you get 2 chances to answer it. The first is just you, for 2 points. The second is with the help of your team for 1. Except in the challenge round where instead of your team its the opposing player that has a chance to ‘steal’ the one point.

Its a great way to relax with friends and a in my case family, my dad plays on my team, on a Monday night. It was actually my dad who recruited me around 10 years ago when I started playing. I started as a convenient sub, I had a cell phone, live 30 minutes from the pubs the league plays out of and was usually free on Mondays. Before long I was playing more then not, and after setting the questions with the team one season I became the regular 5th. I was so into trivia there was a time I was looking at starting my own team in the league. Of course that wasn’t to be. Now my Monday nights are filled with family responsibility and I only make it out to a handful of games each season. But that’s enough, I’m hoping to be able to write a few rounds the next time the team sets the questions, even if I wont be able to be a Question Master for many games.

Mission Accomplished!

With this post I’ve managed to post every day for 2 consecutive months. If you count the last day of September, that’s 62 days in a row. That’s more posts then I had done on my blog in the 4 months since I launched it in May. At times my posts have been lame, but overall I’m very proud of what I’ve been writing over the last 62 days. So now I have a question to answer, do I continue in December. NaBloPoMo is monthly so I could sign up again, plus there is the yearly challenge Holidailies, I’ve done it in years past and been thinking that I’ll do it again.  Of course it starts on the 7th, so if I skip NaBloPoMo I could have a break before gearing up for Holidailies. Of course that would mean giving up on my personal goal of 100 posts in 100 days.

Stay tuned to see which way I go.

Is it beginning to look a lot like Christmas?

We’re on the eve of the last weekend of November, Christmas is less then a month away. The Christmas windows are already out downtown, and all the stores seem to be playing Christmas music. So perhaps it’s time to decorate the house. Except when I look at the calendar and see that it’s still November part of me balks. I believe you should shouldn’t decorate for Christmas until December. Though it looks like this year I will have to brake that rule and start pulling the stuff out this weekend.

With the coming weeks filled with trips to the Santa Experience, Santa Train and Family events there just wont be time. Plus our little guy will be heading to Nana’s for a sleepover party tomorrow night. So there probably wont be a better time to pull the boxes out, setup the tree. We’ll wait till he’s home to decorate. I’ve also got to get our lights setup outside. We might be the only place with lights, but that doesn’t matter they look pretty and well Melissa likes having them.

Wrapping up at the pool

Another session of swimming has wrapped up. For Jacob it was an ok session. He learned some things but in the end didn’t really seem to progress. I think we’ll be sending him back to one on one lessons. He gets to distracted having other kids in the class. I know that’s something he’ll have to learn, but with him starting pre-school in January I think we can focus on getting him to be a better swimmer at swim class and for now that means one on one.

As for Violet it was a great session. I’m not sure how long it is till she’ll start taking lessons with a teacher instead of me, for now I intend to enjoy the time I get with my little girl. She wont stay that way long. She’s really liking the pool and will be interesting to see how quickly she learns the skills.

Registration for the winter is in December with classes starting some time in January, I think. So we’ve got a couple of weeks to determine which class Jacob, and what day they will go. Of course a couple of weeks goes by fast, so we’ll problem try to get that sorted out this weekend.
