Today we had a community BBQ sponsored by my Moms work. So of course she took the kids out to enjoy the festivities. By the time I got home from work, both there faces painted up like Zombies. Of course though I tried, I couldn’t capture them. So instead todays picture of the day is Jacob on the couch after week got home, showing off his makeup.

Tonight Melissa and I did something we haven’t done in years. Tonight we saw a movie opening night. This was posible because our little ones are having a sleep over at Nana and Papa’s house.

Today was a day of outside fun. After running around during the morning we had a nice BBQ lunch before heading out to the splash pad for the rest of the day. We topped it off with a trip to the local outdoor pool. It was a great way to spend a Saturday.

Almost 3 weeks ago I pushed myself to run longer then I ever had before. I ran for 2 hours and 46 minutes. While I was running I felt pretty good, a little thirsty, but I handled that by refilling my water bottle with Gatorade about 3 quarters into the run. My pace was a little slow, but I wasn’t out there for speed. It was my Sunday run. My long run. I am trying to push my sunday runs from the 2 hours I have been running over the last few months up to somewhere between 3 and 4 hours. I want to try running 30km. My goal on Sundays is to leave early for my runs. Usually 9 or 10. On the faithful day I started my run at 11:15am. So I found myself running during the hottest part of the day, and that was my biggest mistake.
After my run I was tired, but I didn’t think anything was wrong. As the day went on it became clear I had used up all my energy and I could barely function. So I slept away most of the evening and all through the night expecting to wake refreshed and ready to work. It didn’t work out that way. I woke up tired, and with a headache. I tried getting up with the kids, making them breakfast and even went through the motions of getting ready for work, before I accepted that I was in no condition to work. So i climbed into bed. Melissa had her hands full that morning, Jacob was also sick he’d thrown up the night before, and started his day the same way. Lucky for us he mostly got it in the bucket. So Melissa and Violet took care of Jacob and I. The day is a bit of a fog, I do know Melissa kept insisting I drink water and Gatorade. I missed 2 days of work, though on the second day I was able to do some work and really didn’t feel 100% till the weekend.

Today before bed Violet was playing out side. It seemed like a good time to try again to revive a game I used to play with Jacob. The old Troll under the bridge game, she runs across the bridge and I try to grab her. Jacob used to love playing it, Violet hasn’t gotten into it. Usually she says ‘I’m the Baby bad troll’ when I would say ‘I’m the Big Bad Troll!”. Though today, with the prompting of the other kids out in the playground she got into it, running and giggling across the bridge.

Today was a strange day for our little family. The men of the house were both sick, so Melissa took Violet out to the park. While there she snapped this picture and I thought it’d make a great picture of the day.
Regular readers of my blog will notice a few changes today. I’ve added a Looking back section and new dynamic header. Plus rearranged some of the additional information you see on my site. Though on the surfaced the changes are minor, I have also made a number of changes under the hood, so please let me know if something looks off or isn’t working properly.
I have been planning the update for over two months and had wanted to launch it at the beginning of May to honor the number of personal milestones I had that week. Unfortunately between my responsibilities at home and at work plus training for my first Half-Marathon I never got everything I wanted done. So instead of waiting another month while I try to finish all the changes I had planned, I decided to launch with what I have and just update it as I complete the additional work.
I am not sure how long the rest of the changes I intend to make will take, June is a busy month for our family with 4 days a week of T-Ball for Jacob, but it will be coming. I plan on starting by finishing the code that generates the Header and Looking Back images. I want them to change less frequently probably either hourly or daily. I’m also working on a system for managing the images that are used flor the header graphic, so that its simple to add more. Depending how it turns out I hope to make it available as either a standalone app or a WordPress plugin.
I hope this is the first of many changes this summer that will make Geek with Kids a better blog to read, so stay tuned.

Today should be another mobile Monday, but once again it looks like it wont be. I’ve been working on reviews of a number of apps, but as I read them over I think I want to take some more time and do them right. I’m currently reviewing a number of E-Reader apps, and will be posting them either in a single big post or as individual posts over the span of a few weeks. There are a couple of factors that are holding up my post. The first is I’ve recently updated my phone to Android version 2.2, I’ll probably be posting about that before the E-Reader series.
I’m also in the process of updating my blog. I’ve been having a few issues behind the scenes recently and so to fix them I’m doing a refresh of my blog. I’ve been taking a little longer then I hopped to get it done, but hopefully by the end of the week you’ll see a bit more polished look with some new features and more regular posts. One of the things I hope to have for the end of the week is a new dynamic header, you can see sample at the top of the post. So Stay tuned.

It seems that life is conspiring to keep my from my blog. There are a number of tweaks and new posts I have been planning that I just can’t seem to get done. To be fair my blog has been the last thing on my mind the last few days, on one level it seems so unimportant when considering some of the things going on with my family. Tonight added a new wrinkle with Melissa spending the evening in urgent care because of a persistent cough. Our picture is a testiment to her wait. When she came in she pull number 50 and the counter was in the low 30s. All should be alright, though as I write this we’re still waiting for the final word from the doctors.
Update: It seems Melissa has Pneumonia, so its off to the drug store to fill her 4 prescriptions.
A new year begins and with it I find myself reflecting on the year that was and planning for the year ahead. So lets start by looking back at the 3 geeky challenges I set for myself last January 1st. There were 3, Finding my Blogging Voice, Project 365, and Coding Challenge. Over all I’m proud of how I met my Challenges. Though there still work that needs to be done. So before I set out my new goals for 2011, lets take a look at the successes and failures.
The Successes:
Where I succeeded was my blogging, taking and posting a picture everyday was surprisingly difficult. Though I managed to get through it and find that I don’t want to stop. I like being able to look back and see snapshots of my life from the last year, and think it’d be great if I could do it for the last decade, More on that in this years challenges later. I’ve also found that by having to post a photo every day on my blog I want to post more. Though I don’t always have the time to find the words. I’ve started Mobile Mondays and I’m looking to add more regular posts soon.
The Failure:
Where I failed was the coding challenge.Though it started out well, I even had a great source for inspiration on the Dream in Code Forms, I just couldn’t manage to keep it up. What really bothers me about it is that I don’t have a single new program to show for the last year. I have a few skeletons, but nothing that I can point to and say look what I did. This is something that I really want to change this year.
