730 Days and Counting

Two years ago today I decided to take control of my blog. I went from the occasional post to posting every day. I didn’t think I could keep it up. The first 3 months I wrote a full post most days, with just the occasional internet video and my weekly Wordless Wednesday, but then I started my 365 challenge and my daily posting got a little easier. It can still be a challenge capturing a moment that’s worth sharing every day, but looking back on it now I wish I had started it sooner. For my readers it means that every day for the last two years if you came to my blog you would find new content. To me that’s something to be proud of.

I was originally inspired to blog every day by National Blog Posting Month(NaBloPoMo) which challenges bloggers every month to post every day, but the big month is November, to coincide with Nation Novel Writing Month(NaNoWriMo). I’m unable to find the time to take part in NaNoWriMo, though I’m hoping as the kids get older I will have a chance to do it again. For now the challenge of taking a picture and blogging it every day is enough. Well Almost enough. I think that this year I’m going to change it up. For the month of November I hope to do a full blog post each day and my daily photo. I’m a little nervous about generating that many posts but I think I need the challenge. I’ve been in a bit of a rut with my daily photos. I had thought of starting my daily double  posting today and go through to the end of the year like I did two years ago to start my daily posting, but with the demands of preparing for my half marathon, I worry I wont have the time. So instead I’m going to easy into the daily double posting. Look for my posting to increase over the month.

To help for inspiration I also plan to using the NaBloPoMo Month theme and daily writing prompts for some of my posts. To help me on the days I can’t seem to think of anything to write. The theme for October is Between, and as I write today’s post I realize that it’s really the theme of my blog for the month, I’m moving between just posting my picture every day with the occasional other post to posting twice a day every day. There will be some growing pains, and I’m not promising that my extra post some days wont just be a random internet video, but there going from now to the end of the year there will be more posts on Geek with Kids.

Ever since I started blogging I looked for a voice for my blog to have, it took me a long time to find it with my daily photo, but now I think it’s time to go beyond that and write about more of the other things that interest me and to make this blog more than just a photo blog, to make it this Geeks home on the internet.

Fitness Friday: Setting a Schedule

This last week I was reminded how hard it can be to find time to run, but with my commitment to run the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon (Fitness Friday: Setting Goals) I know that I need to find the time.  This week with Jacob’s extra Hockey day and unexpected night in the ER, It’s been hard to get out there. I did manage 3 runs this last week which is better than I had done for most of the month, but not enough if I plan to run my race faster than I did in the spring. Looking at the the calendar, I have 17 days till the race. With my last training day being the 14th, I have only 15 days to get my ready.

Time to step up my training. To help me focus on my training I’m going to share my training schedule on my blog, and keep it up-to-date. I’m listing my runs from now till Race Day. Each time I run I’ll update the widget with my time and a link to the Runkeeper event. If I miss one I hope that some of my readers will bug me about it. I need to get out there and run. Not just for the big run either, going forward I hope to continue posting my schedule and want to be held to it. Here is what my schedule looks like for the moment. I’m hoping to run 10 of the 15 days I have before my race. With Sunday’s being my long runs, and Saturday being my day off. It could change, but for now here it is:

Fri Sep 30    – 5K Run
Sun Oct 2    – Long Run
Mon Oct 3    – 5k Run
Wed Oct 5    – 15k Run
Thu Oct 6    – 5k Run
Fri Oct 7    – 10k Run
Sun Oct 9    – Long Run
Mon Oct 10    – 5k Run
Wed Oct 12    – 15k Run

Fitness Friday: Setting Goals

Back in march when I was coming off a disappointing winter of running, I signed up for the for my first Race (First Race). In fact at the time I signed up for 3 races, a 5k, 10k and my first Half Marathon. As we switch seasons from Summer to fall, I realise that I didn’t run nearly as much as I had hopped this summer. So now as the weather cools I want to get back out there and prepare to run my first full marathon next year. So once again I’m setting a goal. This time it’s the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. I’m running the Half-Marathon in memory of my aunt-in-law Debbie who passed away after battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia. So I’m hoping that my friends and family will support me and give to Gilda’s Club Greater Toronto:

Please support the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Charity Challenge.

This is also the kick off for my larger goal of running a Marathon in 2012. I’m still undecided of when that Marathon will be, so stay tuned. You can also expect to see a lot more posts about running in the coming weeks and months.
