Today is Melissa and my 10 year anniversary. To celebrate we’ve headed out-of-town for a romantic weekend without the kids (Thanks Nana and Papa). We headed out after the evening rush hour, so we arrived late, and the cold kept us from heading down to the falls tonight. Though we did get to see them from the warmth of our room. Sure its only the American falls, but all lit up like that, they are quite impressive. .
After dropping Melissa and Violet off at the Science Centre for a play day with a bunch of her friends, I decided to run a little experiment. I headed to a Starbucks with just my Cell Phone and Tablet to see how much code I could write. Though I came up a bit short of my goals, I did find it a successful day.
Today we headed to the Science Centre for a day of science fun with friends. We had a great day. Today’s picture of the day is of one of the exhibits. Do you recognize the face in the bubbles?
Today my little donned the goalie pads and headed between the pipes. She did stellar for her first time in net.
Tonight Melissa was hard at work, wrapping up Violet’s gifts and making her a homemade Mint Chocolate Chip and Oreo Ice Cream Cake, for our little family celebration tomorrow. Her big celebration will happen next week with a bunch of her friends from school.
Over the last few weeks I’ve watched my social media feeds be filled up with photo and video montages of the year that was. What once was only done by companies and big organizations is now available to every who uses social media, with a few clicks of the mouse the year that was is summed up in images and or video. It’s a cool feature, but it relies on you sharing your year with your social networks. It also has the problem that just because you shared it doesn’t mean you want to have it thrown in your face again.
When I saw the first people posting their year in review I went to my Facebook to see what a great year I had, only to be greeted by a disappointing trip through the year in photos. My first thought was how could this be, I mean I post a picture every day, how can that be all that Facebook felt was worth remembering. Of course then it hit me, I don’t share my photos on Facebook, I share them on my blog and share my blog to Facebook. Meaning Facebook doesn’t see my photos, just my posts, and it didn’t include posts in the year in review. Then just a couple of days later my phone buzzed, I had a new Auto awesome, it was Google’s turn to try to sum up my year. So I knew they would do better than Facebook, I use the Google plus images to back up all my photos, so I knew Google had access to a lot of images from the year. And it did a great job, sure it included some images that I wouldn’t want to share publicly, mostly from school trips and birthday parties, but it felt like it did a good job of capturing the year. Last year I took the time to tweak it and created something that I was proud to share, 2013 The Movie.
Yesterday I wrote about my personal experience competing in NaNoWriMo, Today I thought I would take a look at the different technology I used to try to reach 50,000 words. My first year I had a personal notebook that I wrote on quite successfully. In the years since my laptop died and I haven’t replaced really replaced it. So instead I’ve tried a few different technologies for writing my novel. One year I had hopped to write on my Motorola Milestone, I thought with its slide out keyboard it would be perfect. It wasn’t. So this year I was thrilled when through some opportunities at home and work I started November we access to a Laptop and a Tablet to write my novel. So I thought I’d break this post into two parts, first I will compare the Hardware and then I will compare the different software I used.
The month is over, my mad dash to 50,000 words came up short. Very short. I didn’t even manage to write 15,000 words this year, and that’s including my background and world building work in my word count. Still as I sit here and look back at the month I feel like it’s been a success. I found a new world I want to explore with stories. My son wrote over 1000 words of his own novel and seemed to really enjoy the process. So I thought that I would take some time on this the first of December and write about my experiences during NaNoWriMo
Tonight I continued my November routine of heading to Starbucks with Jacob to do some writing. I haven’t managed to find my novel writing groove, but it’s been fun trying. Tonight I don’t want to write about my struggles, I want to write about Jacobs success. My little man hit 1000 words tonight. His writing has mostly been limited to our coffee shop writing sessions, so that he’s managed to write that much is very impressive. He still hopes to hit 2000, but with only 4 days left in November it will take a lot of work.
Early Sunday mornings is usually Hockey Practice for our little family. Today it was Violet’s turn, early in the practice I capture this image of the kids kneeling on the ice listening to the coach. Violet is there on the right in her number 5 jersey, trying to stay on one knee like the rest of the kids.
