Project 365-012: Sleeping Boy

Day 12

Tonight when I peaked in on Jacob to make sure that he was sleeping soundly. As I looked down at my sleeping boy I wondered how he was comfortable sprawled out like that. He’s growing so fast, it seems like just yesterday that he first slept in his big boy bed. A bed he looked so small in last December when he first slept in it. Now he looks like a little boy in his little boy bed. I’m now even thinking it’s time to take off the Side bar from his bed.

Project 365-007: An Evening With Trains

Trains 2010-01-07 002

Today while sitting downstairs I heard a little voice call, ‘Daddy I need your help’. So I went up to see what my little guy wanted. He wanted to do his train set in a different way, using the Firehouse.  So I spent an enjoy able evening with my son playing trains. We used a lot of the pieces he got for Christmas to put his track together in a way similar to how it looked on the box, but with our own touches. It’s a great way to spend an evening. The train table is one of Jacob’s favourite toys, it can be The Island of  Sodor when he’s playing Thomas and Friends, or its the track to the North Pole when he’s playing Polar Express. It’s a lot of fun for Jacob, Me and even Violet who likes to stand at the side and grab trains.

Project 365-004: First day of School

DSC_0234

Today Jacob started pre-school. So at 10 to 9 this morning we headed out in the snow to walk to the school. He was very excited about starting school today, though the thought of making foot prints in the snow kept him walking in the cold. Dropping him off went without a hitch, he almost didn’t even say good bye to me.  The day went great and Jacob is really looking forward to his next class on Friday. I was relieved that the pickup went without a hitch. The parents wait outside and the teachers bring the kids out to us, and after waiting a little while, he came out all smiles. I was worried he wouldn’t want to leave like at our Interview in December. I’m really glad he’s in the Play to Learn program, I think it will be great for him.

Looking forward to a years milestones

January will be a month of Milestones for our little family. First  we have Jacob starting Pre-School tomorrow and registration for Kindergarten. I thought I had more time before I had to think about sending him off to school, but it seems that it’s all happening all at once. Of course his pre-school is only 2 days a week and though registration starts tomorrow he doesn’t start school till the fall.  Follow that up with Violet’s first birthday and it’s clearly a big month for our little family. It seems like they are growing up so fast, but then that’s what it means to be a parent. To watch your kids grow and change. Every month has a new milestone, a new first and new challenges.

Finding the words to describe the those moments, the Joy, Excitement, and fear is never easy. It’s the reason I started to blog, I wanted share the moments of Fatherhood. In an attempt to keep posting I expanded to include some of my other interests but at the heart this is a place to talk about fatherhood. In this new year I’ll try to remember that, I’ll try to write more about the the time I spend with my children and my family. Try and not let this become just a place of geeky posts. I will remember that though they might be the harder posts to write they are worth writing. I’m still working out what it’ll mean for my blog to try and focus more on fatherhood, but I’m sure I’ll figure it out and when I do, I’ll share it.

Project 365-002: Let’s build a Fort

Day 2

For Christmas Jacob got Crazy Forts, so today the two of use built his first fort. It was fun pulling the pieces out of the box, watching as he counted the purple ball connectors. Then we looked at the examples on the box and he picked the one he wanted to build. He had a little trouble putting the pieces together himself, but I’m sure he’ll get it in time. It was a great Father Son time. I can’t wait till we build our next fort. of course I can already see that to build really cool forts we’ll need to get another set or two.

Here are a couple of bonus pictures:

Another Look back: Jacob’s first Hockey Video

I had hoped to have a new hockey  video to share with you but it’s not ready. So let’s look back at Jacob’s first Hockey video in anticipation of the new one I’m hoping to share soon.

The Santa Experience

On Saturday we dressed the kids up and headed to the local mall for half hour with Santa. He sings songs, reads stories and does magic tricks. It seems like a much better way for the kids to see Santa then waiting in line and getting 2 minutes posing for a picture. Jacob had a good time and did pretty well with the story time, though he did manage to get really close to Santa.

Of course when it was time to sit on Santa’s knee Jacob jumped right up and told Santa what he wanted for Christmas, but violet wasn’t having any of it:

Going back to the Barber

Last week I got my hair cut, I don’t know if the hair dresser I end to was having a bad day or If I just wasn’t clear with him, but it was a crappy . But it was better then I had so I lived with it. Fast forward to Friday we took Jacob to a kids hair cutting place and they did a horrible Job. It was officially the week of bad haircuts, I’m just glad Violet doesn’t have hair so she was spared having a bad haircut.

With Christmas photos coming up we could just live with the bad hair cuts, so Saturday morning we looked around our neighbourhood for a simple men’s barbershop. We found 1, Philip & Frank’s Barber Shop. It’s just a little shop with a few chairs, and a couple of barbers. From the moment Jacob climbed up on the board placed a cross the arms of the chair the place brought back memories of my childhood trips to the barbershop.

Barbershop

He cut Jacob’s hair great and so I figured I might as well climb into the chair and get my cut fixed as well. It was great. The cut is perfect and it’s the little things that just make it great. He used a straight razor for the edges. I think I’ve found my barber, no more booking appointments or hair salons for me.

To Nap or not to Nap

Over the last little while we’ve been having some bedtime issues with Jacob. When he has his afternoon nap he doesn’t want to go to bed, sometimes it’s 10 or 11 before he finally goes down for the night. So you think get rid of his nap, but that’s easier said then done. Right now when Jacob doesn’t nap he becomes grumpy and acts out by 4, It’s even worse if you try to shorten his nap by waking him up.

JacobSleeping

If fact in the last six weeks I can trace all of Jacobs major melt downs, at home and in public to him being over tired. This isn’t a good thing. So the question is what is the solution? I’m thinking the only solution is taking the nap away and living through grumpy Jacob until he adjusts to a earlier bedtime and perhaps a slightly later wake up time. The question is when is best to deal with the Grumpy Jacob. I don’t think it’s fair to have Melissa dealing with it alone while I work and she is at home with the kids, but it will take longer then a weekend. So do we wait till I’m off around Christmas? But do we really want to have moody Jacob at all the different family occasions during that time? Any thoughts from the interweb?
