POD: Broken Bone, but not a broken spirit

Today Violet had an accident. While coming down the stairs as she neared the bottom, and was beyond what I thought of as the danger zone, she slipped and fell. At first we didn’t think it was serious, but it soon became clear that it was something more serious. So we packed the kids into the car, dropped Jacob off at his Nana and Papa’s House and headed to the ER.

The ER at St. Josephs was busy when we got there and so we settled down for what we’d know would be a long wait. Through all of it Violet was doing really great with the pain she must have been in. After she had some Advil she brightened up and started chatting up a storm. She even tried to sing a lullaby to a baby who was crying in the ER.

POD: A Book from the Past

2011-02-06_20-59-11_207

Last week we received a box of books, going through it this weekend I found lots of great books that the kids will love, I also found one that interested me, CyberSurfer: The OWL Internet Guide for Kids, by Nyla Ahmad. The first thing that caught my eye was how proudly it proclaimed “Cyber Blastoff Disk: With Hypertext Links for WIN/MAC”. It seemed so quant. What amused me more was as I flipped through the pages and found this:

The book was published in 1996 so it’s a window on a completely different internet then the one we have today. So the addresses in the book are no longer active, but it still presents an interesting look at how the internet works. If fact it even includes information about Archie, Gopher and Newsgroups. Now if I could only find a floppy drive to see what’s on the disk.

POD: Thinking outside of the Lunch Box

2011-02-05_12-28-03_527_Toronto

Today for the kids lunch Melissa and I got creative. Using decorative baking trays we put together a sample tray for each of them.  They seemed to really like it. I’m thinking we’re going to have to get a few more baking trays. Of course if I was going to be fair about it, I’d talk about how Melissa used to make that kind of lunches for Jacob all the time, but you don’t need to know that.

Today Jacob brought home some new homework. It’s something we signed up for last week and have been waiting to start. It’s the Kindergarten Snuggle-Up-and-Read Club. Each week Jacob will pick a couple of books to bring home. He’ll read them with mommy or daddy there to encourage him and help if one of the words is too hard. Once the book is complete we as questions about the story. Then we fill out his reading log. Jacob writes out the of the story, draws a picture of his favourite part and then writes his opinion of the story. It’s a great exercise and I’m looking forward to doing it with him each week.

Jacob Writing on Wall

It’s amazing how one little thing can show both how clever Jacob is and that he’s still a little boy. You see today Jacob decided to tell a story with words and a picture. Unfortunately he did it on the walls with  pen. I’m not sure why he leaves off arms when he’s drawing people, but as you can see his spelling is very good. You can even see where he made a correction in what he wrote.  Just in case you can’t see it in the picture he wrote “Jacob and Noah with apples”.

Today before bed Jacob and I set Coco up in his window to watch the coming snow. I know Jacob is excited to have more snow to play in, but to me all the fuss seems silly. I mean yes there could be a lot of snow coming. It’s winter, that’s normal. It just seems a bit of an over reaction to be planning to be shutdown tomorrow before we see any of the coming snow. Of course I might just be under reacting. Perhaps the city will be crippled under a blanket of snow, but I just can’t worry about it till the snow hits the ground.

POD: Building a suprise

2011-01-30_21-09-01_59_Toronto

This evening before Jacob headed to bed, he asked me to close my eyes he had a surprise for me. As I sat with my eyes closed I wondered what my surprise would be, it seemed to take a long time. I could hear him run upstairs and come back down, each time asking if my eyes were still closed. To be fair my eyes weren’t closed, I was on the computer while he assembled his surprise behind me on the carpet. When I finally looked back he’d built what you see in the picture. And once again I’m reminded how much I love  blocks, and how even though it’s been months since I’ve seen him play with them, they are great to have around.
