POD: Thinking outside of the Lunch Box

Today for the kids lunch Melissa and I got creative. Using decorative baking trays we put together a sample tray for each of them.  They seemed to really like it. I’m thinking we’re going to have to get a few more baking trays. Of course if I was going to be fair about it, I’d talk about how Melissa used to make that kind of lunches for Jacob all the time, but you don’t need to know that.

Today Jacob brought home some new homework. It’s something we signed up for last week and have been waiting to start. It’s the Kindergarten Snuggle-Up-and-Read Club. Each week Jacob will pick a couple of books to bring home. He’ll read them with mommy or daddy there to encourage him and help if one of the words is too hard. Once the book is complete we as questions about the story. Then we fill out his reading log. Jacob writes out the of the story, draws a picture of his favourite part and then writes his opinion of the story. It’s a great exercise and I’m looking forward to doing it with him each week.

POD: Even bad behaviour can have some positives

Jacob Writing on Wall

It’s amazing how one little thing can show both how clever Jacob is and that he’s still a little boy. You see today Jacob decided to tell a story with words and a picture. Unfortunately he did it on the walls with  pen. I’m not sure why he leaves off arms when he’s drawing people, but as you can see his spelling is very good. You can even see where he made a correction in what he wrote.  Just in case you can’t see it in the picture he wrote “Jacob and Noah with apples”.

Today before bed Jacob and I set Coco up in his window to watch the coming snow. I know Jacob is excited to have more snow to play in, but to me all the fuss seems silly. I mean yes there could be a lot of snow coming. It’s winter, that’s normal. It just seems a bit of an over reaction to be planning to be shutdown tomorrow before we see any of the coming snow. Of course I might just be under reacting. Perhaps the city will be crippled under a blanket of snow, but I just can’t worry about it till the snow hits the ground.

POD: Building a suprise

2011-01-30_21-09-01_59_Toronto

This evening before Jacob headed to bed, he asked me to close my eyes he had a surprise for me. As I sat with my eyes closed I wondered what my surprise would be, it seemed to take a long time. I could hear him run upstairs and come back down, each time asking if my eyes were still closed. To be fair my eyes weren’t closed, I was on the computer while he assembled his surprise behind me on the carpet. When I finally looked back he’d built what you see in the picture. And once again I’m reminded how much I love  blocks, and how even though it’s been months since I’ve seen him play with them, they are great to have around.
