Heading home I snapped a picture of a subway as it pulled into the station. I had been thinking of taking a picture of a train for a couple of days now, but I always envisioned the picture to be of the front as it came into the station. As It’s not the picture I got, I was just pulling the camera out when the train came thundering into the station. I thought about waiting for another train/day to take the picture. Instead I snapped this one. It’s strange how It worked out, just before I took the picture the last person on the platform disappeared up the escalator. Leaving me with a nice shot of just the train and the deserted platform. A rare sight at 10 to 6 on a week night.

Cloud Gazing: Backupify
One of the biggest fears about moving to the cloud is how do you backup your data. The data sits on someone else’s server and usually there is no easy way for you to backup that data. You are at the mercy of the service provider to backup your data and if they go under, cancel your account or just don’t have a backup strategy you could be out of luck That’s where Backupify comes in. Backupify is a service that allows you to backup your different cloud based services. You can backup the data to your own Amazon S3 account, or just use Backupify’s account. This is great for people who want to make sure that there important files are in more then one place.
Setup is simple, after creating your account you are given a list of service they support. You select the service you want to back up, enter your credentials and away it goes. Where ever possible it uses Oath to authenticate so that you don’t have to trust backupify with your password. Though there are some services that don’t support this. Once the service is registered it will backup, usually in the next 24 hours.
Project 365-017: Violet enjoys some water
Today when Melissa left to go shopping with her mom I hoped to get some chores done around the house. After all it was Nap time for the kids. I expected the challenge to be Jacob, but it turned out that Violet was the one who refused to nap. So I had an unexpected afternoon with Violet. I tried to play some games with her and figured while I was at it I’d see if she would take water in her sippy cup. She likes cups, she tries to drink from any cup she see, so we have been debating whether we should bother with a sippy cup at all. Today I filled her cup with some water and let her have a go with it. It was hit and miss. At times she would play with it, others she tried to drink from it. Watching her I new what I wanted for today’s picture.
Project 365-016: First BBQ of the Year
Tonight I fired up the BBQ and cooked up some chicken breasts. I probably should have pulled out steaks for the occasion, after all its not every day you BBQ in January, but the chicken was defrosted in the fridge. It was a great night for BBQing, I didn’t even need my Jacket when I went out to check on the food.
Melissa was out at a friends working on decoration and treats for Violet’s birthday leaving me and Jacob to fend for ourselves. So I invited my mom and niece over and made Grilled Chicken, Pirogues and Caesar salad for dinner. Though just Jacob and I had the Chicken. Then we watched Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. An enjoyable little evening.
Project 365-015: Getting Dressed
This is what happens when you send a 3 year old to dress himself. We were having a lounging around in PJs sort of a day, everyone was getting over being sick. Jacob wanted to build his Train Crazy Fort and I thought I would take some pictures for my Photo of the day. So not wanting him to be in his PJs I asked him to go up and get dressed. Now I was a little curious to see what he’d choose to put on, I don’t really know what I expected. What he chose was a cute little outfit. Though the shirt was inside-out and backwards and the pants were just backwards. I was impressed. Of course when I saw how he was dressed I new what I’d be using for my picture and once again forgot to get pictures of the Train Crazy Fort.
Project 365-014: Sickness
Today wasn’t a good day in our house. It started 2 nights ago when Violet threw up in her bed, repeatedly. It seemed like it would be better after she was fin all day but then while she was sitting in the high chair, up came her last bottle and probably everything she had that afternoon. So we got her squared away and we were just hopping that Jacob wouldn’t get what ever it was making Violet sick. Of course that hope was dashed a couple hours after he went to bed. It was a long night, I’m not sure how many bed sheets we went through, but it seemed like a lot.
I probably would have gone to work, except in the morning he was unable to keep down even water, so I stayed home to help out. Jacob spent the morning sleeping and the afternoon lounging. Violet seemed ok, not great, but there was no throw up so that was a plus. To be fair Jacob didn’t through up again after his morning scare. It was a long day. To make it more fun both Melissa and I spent the day feeling sick. Though we both managed to keep from throwing up. For me the key to that was the subject of tonight’s picture. Here is hoping that every one has a better night.
Project 365-013: Skating with Jacob
Tonight was Jacob’s second skating lesson of 2010, the second time he laced up at Long Branch Centennial Arena. What set tonight apart from other skating lessons is that I strapped on skates and got on the Ice with Jacob and Danny. It was an interesting experience then watching from the sidelines. I had hoped to get better shots being one the ice, but It didn’t work out which is why today’s picture is of the arenas sign.
Two things became quite clear to me watching Jacob skate tonight, the first is he’s really getting it. He spent almost the entire lesson skating skating on his own. He still needs to get the confidence to stand up on his own, but he’s close. Second if I don’t get on the ice more he’ll be a better skater then me by the end of this session of lessons.
Project 365-012: Sleeping Boy
Tonight when I peaked in on Jacob to make sure that he was sleeping soundly. As I looked down at my sleeping boy I wondered how he was comfortable sprawled out like that. He’s growing so fast, it seems like just yesterday that he first slept in his big boy bed. A bed he looked so small in last December when he first slept in it. Now he looks like a little boy in his little boy bed. I’m now even thinking it’s time to take off the Side bar from his bed.
Disconnected…
For the last 3 week I have felt a little lost, my phone is broken and So I don’t have access to all things I had started to take for granted. I miss having access to my E-Mail, Calendar, Twitter, and Evernotes. I have been using Melissa’s phone, but its not the same. I don’t want to install my applications to her phone or setup my email accounts. So I have been making do, mostly by being disconnected. Of course I will loose even the limited connection when Melissa goes back to work in the coming weeks.
So the solution is obvious, get a new phone. There are 3 things keeping me from that, first my contract still has 13 months left so the deals I can get for new hardware is limited, Second is now is not the time for the added expense of a new phone. Third I don’t know what phone to get. Its probably the single biggest issue I face. Deals can be negotiated, money and can be found, but I don’t know what phone I want. I like the LG IQ, but its a resistive touch screen (Best with Stylus) and running Windows Mobile. The HTC Hero is cool but I really want a hardware keyboard. I think I want the Motorola Droid or Millstone as it will be called when it comes to Telus, I just don’t know how long I’ll have to wait. I have considered just buying a regular phone that I could use till I knew what phone I wanted and had a deal that made it worth getting. I hope to have my phone situation figured out by the end of the month. When I do I’m sure I’ll be sharing a new gadget with my readers.
Project 365-011: Exposed TTC (Updated)
Today’s Picture didn’t turn out as clear as I hopped when I snapped it. I was waiting for a bus at a TTC Station and workings were installing components for new automated doors. I thought seeing the inner workings would make an interesting picture. The Picture is still interesting just not clear. It makes me wish I was caring around a real camera and not just the crappy on on the cell phone. Perhaps my next phone will have a better camera.
Fun Trivia for my Toronto based readers. What station was I at?
