POD: Portal to fun?

DSC_0008

Ever since the family bought me Portal for my birthday Jacob has wanted to play it. I usually had over the control and watch as he tries to figure out the controls and the onscreen puzzles. Today it was just so cute that I had to take a picture of him trying to figure out where to place the portal to get by the puzzle he was on. We’ve only got to games that I let him play on the PlayStation, Portal 2 and Little Big planet. I’m not sure which he prefers, though after watching him again today I wonder if it’s time to get him his first console game.

POD: Happy Birthday!

DSC_0323

Today was a double birthday, our nation and the greatest women in our nation share the same birthday. So of course we celebrated the birth of our nation by blowing up a small portion of it. All jokes aside, it was a great day spent with the family and friends. It was so nice to be able to spend the day with Melissa. Usually he has to work on her birthday, but through some weird twist of fate this year she’s home the entire long weekend.

Fitness Friday: Milestones

image

We I started working on my fitness Friday post for today I pulled up my running log(pictured above). Added the runs I had done in the month of June and I was surprised to find that I was less than 300 metres away from reaching 1000km run in the last 13 months. It amazes me that I’ve gone that far. Of course all that running has had an effect on my weight, a few weeks ago Melissa put together the picture below to remind me of the change. I’ve been waiting for the right time to share it with the world, and today is that right time.

Today is July first the half way mark of the year, and so it seem like a good time to refocus on my health and fitness.  So far this year I’ve had some good months and some bad, it’s now time to take a step back and get into a proper rhythm. After I started the month of June running so hard, and ended up costing through the month. I need to get serious moving forward and set some goals and picking some races. My goal is simple, run more and run faster. I want to be running 4+ times a week, but with our schedules I know that would be impossible. So I am setting a simpler goal of at running at least 7 times ever 2 weeks. I’m still working out the distances of my runs but I am thing around over 40k a week. As for the races, I’m still figuring them out. I know I’m going to be running the Half Marathon in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, I now just need to find a race between now and then to run. Perhaps the Acura Toronto 10-Miler & 5K, Toronto Canada. More on that in the weeks to come.

To go with the increase in my running I’m also going to start publicly posting my weight. All year I’ve been struggling with it, after a winter where I gained 15 pounds I’ve managed to get as much as 10 pounds of it off, but haven’t been keeping it off. So now I’m setting my goal My goal is to be under 200 lbs by the end of the year. That’s 26 pounds, in 26 weeks. I’m still working on the widget I’ll use, but for now I’ve added Health & Fitness to the side panel and will be updating it in the days ahead.

POD: Eating like a Big Girl

VioletEatslikeabiggirl

Today Melissa took the kids on a little adventure, first to lunch at Subway and then to the supermarket. Our picture today was taken at lunch. It seems Violet decided it was time to eat her sandwich like a big girl. Usually she would take it apart and eat it in pieces. Today was different today she ate it like a sandwich, a fact that wasn’t lost on her. In this picture she’s tell mommy that she’s eating sandwich like a big girl.

POD: The Learning Continues

DSC_0267

If you have read my blog at all tonight, you know that Jacob’s last day of school was today. So it amused me when I got home today to find him working on his homework. It seems that his teacher had given him an exercise book that they worked on in class. It was a My Letter Sounds  Book. Each page has few activities to do, from an action, to colour and of course tracing the letters. Since it wasn’t finished his teacher sent it home to be worked on over the summer. Jacob didn’t waste any time getting into it.

Last day of school

DSC_0274

While I write this Jacob is getting for the last day of school. It’s hard to believe that the year has gone by so fast. It seems like yesterday we were giving him his Schultte and walking him to his first class. Of course it was a lot of yesterdays and now we must look to the tomorrows. The biggest question facing Melissa and me is if he should stay where he is, or move to a new school and start french immersion. It’s a hard question on we seem to have been struggling with all year.

Yesterday while picking Jacob up at school Melissa had an impromptu parent teacher conference. They happen fairly often throughout the year and really let us stay on top of how Jacob was doing. It’s also something we’ll lose if we’re putting him on the bus each morning, instead of walking him to school.  Yesterdays conversation was about next year and about who will be teaching Jacob next year, it seems he has a good teacher lined up if he stays, to go with that he’ll be all day, where french immersion is still only half day.

Watching Jacob grow during his first year of school has been great, I am so proud of all he’s learned. That he picked up a chapter book for independent reading is just so wonderful and it makes me question, if I want to add a new language into the mix.

In the end there are pros and cons for either decision, and we want to make the choice that’s right for Jacob, unfortunately without a time machine there is no way to be sure which way will be best for Jacob, all we can do is choose one and help him through any challenges that come his way.

POD: Violet’s first Movie

DSC_0027

Today  while Melissa was at work I thought it’d be fun to take the kids out for a fun day. We went to the Queensway theatre to see Cars 2. Jacob loved the movie. Violet liked it but was perhaps still a little young to sit through an entire movie. Of course when I got home I realised Melissa was hopping to take Jacob and our niece to see it. I think she still can, I’m pretty sure that Jacob would love to go again.
